Aim    
To ensure that learners are able to provide information on family law including recently enacted legislation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • identify and define spouses, civil partners, cohabitees and other family types
  • state the main legislative provisions relating to marriage, marriage breakdown, separation and divorce
  • outline the main family law issues arising relating to family breakdown in the current recession with a particular focus on issues relating to children, property and debt
  • state the main provisions Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010; State the general status of children in married and unmarried relationships in relation to guardianship, rights of parents, grandparents and financial support in the case of marital/non-marital relationship breakdown
  • identify the rights and obligations of non-marital fathers
  • state the main differences between the rights and obligations of non-marital partners; cohabitees; civil partners and spouses.
